“I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way – things I had no words for.”

-Georgia O’Keeffe

My first exposure to art therapy occured when I was a child. While I didn't know what art therapy was at the time, the way it let my mind process information, ask difficult questions, and express my thoughts and feelings changed me.

Art has always been an integral part of how I experience the world. Even if I'm doodling, the act of creating something from nothing gives me energy and focus. Viewing my own work later gives me perspective and insight.

While your connection to art and artmaking may differ, the drive to create is an instinctive one. Art is a universal language, and putting stories, thoughts, and memories into a physical form is part of the human experience. Art Therapy takes this natural tendency and uses it to help artists better know themselves, and use that understanding to improve and grow.

Art Therapy is a field of therapeutic services that operates on the understanding that art and art making are universal. Trained art therapists understand the vast potential and information held in every brush stroke, pencil mark, and sculpture, and aid the artist client in interpreting the meaning of their work, or simply gaining a greater understanding of the feelings that emerge during the art making experience.

Just as art has transcended generations, Art Therapy is not limited to age, race, religion, gender, socioeconomic status, or creative ability. Interestingly, the less formal art training one has, the easier it is to access the true signficance of the art piece. Click here to see if Art Therapy is right for you!
